About Us

Martial Arts Magazine Australia (MAMA) is Australia’s only ad-free martial arts publication, dedicated to celebrating the depth, diversity, and authenticity of martial arts across the nation and beyond.

Published by TTP, MAMA was born from a simple belief: martial arts stories deserve to be told without commercial influence. We’re not here to sell products or push agendas—we’re here to honour the practitioners, traditions, techniques, and communities that make martial arts meaningful.

From traditional karate and kung fu to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Māori warrior arts, and everything in between, MAMA provides a platform for authentic voices. Our pages feature:

Deep-dive articles exploring martial arts history, philosophy, and culture
Practical guidance from experienced instructors
Personal stories that inspire and connect our community
Tournament coverage celebrating Australian martial artists
Health and wellness insights for lifelong training
Cultural perspectives honouring martial traditions worldwide

We maintain high editorial standards while keeping our content accessible, engaging, and free from commercial bias. Every article, every image, every story is chosen because it matters to martial artists—not because someone paid for placement.

Whether you’re a beginner taking your first steps on the mat, a black belt with decades of experience, or an instructor shaping the next generation, MAMA is your magazine. We’re building a community of martial artists who value substance over flash, tradition over trends, and authentic connection over commercial noise.

How MAMA Began

Martial Arts Magazine Australia launched from a vision: what if Australian martial artists had a publication that truly served them—without ads, without commercial pressure, without editorial compromise?

Editor in chief – Vanessa McKay, a lifelong martial artist and small press owner, saw a gap in the market. While commercial martial arts magazines chased advertising dollars, authentic voices were being drowned out. Stories that mattered were losing space to product placement.

MAMA was created as the antidote. Every issue is funded by readers and supported by contributors who believe in the mission. Our editorial decisions are driven by one question: “Will this serve our readers?”

The response has been overwhelming. Martial artists across Australia and beyond have embraced a publication that respects their intelligence, honours their traditions, and gives voice to their stories without corporate filters.

We’re small, we’re independent, and we’re proud of it. MAMA proves that quality content and editorial integrity can thrive when a community believes in something bigger than profit.

Our Mission

Martial Arts Magazine Australia exists to serve the martial arts community with integrity, authenticity, and zero commercial influence.

We believe martial arts is more than combat—it’s culture, community, character development, and lifelong growth. Every issue celebrates these deeper dimensions while providing practical value to practitioners at every level.

By remaining ad-free, we preserve editorial independence. Our contributors are chosen for their knowledge and passion, not their advertising budgets. Our content serves readers, not sponsors.

MAMA is a labour of love, published quarterly by practitioners, for practitioners. We’re building something rare in modern media: a publication that answers only to its community.
